What is an Illustration?

An illustration can be defined as the process of interpreting or visually explaining a concept, text or a process which is used for integrating the media such as books, flyers, magazines, posters, video games, films - even other types of animations such as in diets (e.g. the plexus slim diet review).

Illustration can be interpreted in a more expressive manner or can be highly technical. It can also be very realistic or stylized which completely depends on the main purpose of the illustration.

History Of Illustration

If you go through the history, then you will find that humans have always taken help of narrative images for storytelling. In Lascaux, France the oldest illustrations were found in the cave paintings which are estimated to be made in 15000 BC. These images depicted some important events that took place during that time.

Even in old civilizations like Italy and Greece, illustrative arts were used to represent pictorially the Gods, humans and their traditions. Their illustration comprised of mythological tales, festivals, sporting events and funeral scenes. Even the walls and floors of the wealthy people had illustrative paintings.

In the medieval period, illuminated manuscripts were used which had hand drawn narrative pictorial representations. By the 15th century, printing press was invented, thus books were widely used by people. In the 16th century, wood block printing was used by Japan for illustrations which had vivid colors, expressive lines and subtle tones.

By the starting of 18th century, illustrated books, mass market magazines and newspapers came into picture. And with the advancement in the printing technology in the 19th century, illustrators could freely experiment with colors and other techniques. This was considered as the golden age for illustration in America.

With time, the method of illustration has also evolved. Earlier artists would use paints, paper and pencils for interpretation but with the introduction of digital technology, software for 2D and 3D are used by artists to portray a concept.
